I tried to take a picture of myself looking menacing, to scare the haters and negative Nellies I’ve encountered lately, but my menacing look is more like “squinting” or “is she drunk?” and it just wasn’t working. So this is what you get. This is me. And I like me. Haters to the left.

“Let me thank my dear friend Senator Clinton….no, Secretary Clinton,” Obama said. Realizing her mistake, she allowed an exaggerated pause.

“I almost said President Clinton!”

That got a rise out of the group, which cheered and laughed as Clinton smilingly waved away the mistake.

Judging from this photo — which accompanies this (overlong and remarkably uncritical) New York Times piece on Mattel’s upcoming “Mad Men Barbie” collection — Joan has undergone a fairly major body-proportion overhaul at the hands of Mattel’s doll designers.

It’s nice to see that Mattel is looking out for young girls’ best interests by turning Joan into a more-appropriate body-image role model before marketing her as a plaything, huh?

It’s liposuction Barbie!

We wouldn’t want our children playing with anatomically proportioned dolls, now, would we? Gotta set those impossible beauty standards early.

Yesterday, anti-choice state Sen. Vogel introduced a resolution “commending crisis pregnancy centers.” She wants to honor fake clinics for encouraging “women to make positive life choices by equipping them with complete and accurate information regarding their pregnancy options.” WE KNOW THAT’S NOT TRUE!

Should this resolution pass, it will lay the groundwork for fake clinics to receive even more money and support from the state. Tell your congresspeople to vote against Joint Resolution SJ265/HJ435! There are only three days left in the session.

Don’t know who your Virginia state representatives are? Find out here, then click “Send A Message to Your Delegate and Senator.”

Make sure you specify in the subject line you are against Joint Resolution SJ265/HJ435 ”Commending pregnancy care centers,” then tell them why you are opposed to this bill in a few sentences. ctrain’s post is a great reference for what to say. For example:

I am one of your constituents, and I am writing to express my concern and strong opposition to Joint Resolution SJ265/HJ435 “Commending pregnancy care centers.”

I’ll give you a moment to contemplate the many ways in which treating feminism as “woman’s work” is some fucked-up irony, right there.

Now here’s the other thing about leaving the rectification of gender-based inequalities to the ladies: Misogynist men don’t respect women. They don’t listen to women; they won’t acknowledge a woman’s authority on her own lived experiences; they’re not going to learn anything from women, and certainly not feminist women.

Men who think women are less than need to hear that they’re terribly, infuriatingly, and demonstrably wrong from other men. Publicly. Passionately. As loud as the loud, so very loud, voices on the other side. One of the ways their self-reassuring bullshit works is via the effective void of male dissension, which supports their erroneous belief that they are the “objective” arbiters of womanhood. Well, if we’re so wrong, where are the other people [men] to say so? they wonder smugly.

They count on feminist men never showing up en masse for the main event.

‎Longtime Boston Red Sox shortstop Nomar Garciaparra retired from baseball on Wednesday morning, signing a one-day contract with the Red Sox in order to retire as a member of the team.

I think I’m going to cry.

A sad, great thing NoMAH did. Props.

I encourage you to. Maybe we can attack some of the key sticking points here. Parts of your response - which did seem very personally hurt, and for that I apologize - did not seem aligned with facts, or seemed to be irrelevant. Help me see what I’m missing; all arguments thus far have been made in good faith.

Oh, don’t you worry, you didn’t personally hurt me. You pissed me off. I got personal and used myself as an example because, well, like Gabby, I’m not unattractive even though I do not fit your or Hollywood’s criteria for attraction. And I find it absurd that my weight would influence any children to whom I may be a role model, certainly not with the rest of society telling them that my body is ugly. Anyway, I really don’t want to get into this now for numerous reasons. Maybe later we can engage in a debate, but at the moment, it seems as though we are not understanding each other at all.

No one’s worried about that hot dog contest kid’s cholesterol. If he was fat we’d be all types of stressed out and finger-wagging, but he’s thin so teehee he sure put away a lot of hot dogs, guys, omigawd, how does he do it?

The overwhelming majority of well-known black female actors are still thin, so I don’t think you have to worry about little black kids on the playground letting up on the teasing. I’m more concerned about these girls not seeing enough of themselves on television, or seeing them in roles as diverse as the ones they and their friends and relatives occupy in real life than some bullshit over this woman’s weight.

And having been a “young minority girl” myself, I can assure you that Oprah having a successful TV show and being good in The Color Purple didn’t suddenly make us all want to run out and eat too many cheeseburgers.
