Hello there, Unsolicited Analysis. We meet again. This is the Black National Anthem. It’s a beautiful and moving song. If your last exposure to it was during that high school assembly, I highly recommend you give it a listen.

Now, in my admittedly white and privileged opinion, I can see the Black National Anthem and its message as totally valid and not divisive. Recognizing and celebrating differences and diversity does not equal segregation.

By sitting down in an auditorium/gymnasium full of people who were standing, you said very clearly and disruptively, “I do not respect your experience as a black person.” This, while not your intent, was the message you conveyed; it was a very divisive one at that, and thus counterproductive. You, a white kid, ended up detracting attention from your black classmates who were, for the length of one school assembly, given the opportunity to express their American experience, how it differed from yours. And by immediately dismissing the possibility that these students may be playing the Black National Anthem to demonstrate the struggle of black people in America and that this deserves respect, yes, I can see how it was racist, even if your racism was coming from a place of ignorance/unexamined privilege. A better choice would have been to keep an open mind. Which is something you appear to be trying to do now, I think, so there’s that. And you were in high school; we all make rash decisions in high school.

You haven’t mentioned how you currently feel about the Black National Anthem, and while your opinions may have changed, you did not clearly articulate that, although doing so could have saved you quite a bit of grief here on Tumblr today.

Save Me — Aimee Mann

Turning to Clinton — her husband’s erstwhile rival for the 2008 Democratic presidential nomination — Obama kept up the good cheer.

“Let me thank my dear friend Senator Clinton….no, Secretary Clinton,” Obama said. Realizing her mistake, she allowed an exaggerated pause.

“I almost said President Clinton!”

That got a rise out of the group, which cheered and laughed as Clinton smilingly waved away the mistake.

It’s nice to see that Mattel is looking out for young girls’ best interests by turning Joan into a more-appropriate body-image role model before marketing her as a plaything, huh?

Yesterday, anti-choice state Sen. Vogel introduced a resolution “commending crisis pregnancy centers.” She wants to honor fake clinics for encouraging “women to make positive life choices by equipping them with complete and accurate information regarding their pregnancy options.” WE KNOW THAT’S NOT TRUE!

Should this resolution pass, it will lay the groundwork for fake clinics to receive even more money and support from the state. Tell your congresspeople to vote against Joint Resolution SJ265/HJ435! There are only three days left in the session.

Don’t know who your Virginia state representatives are? Find out here, then click “Send A Message to Your Delegate and Senator.”

Make sure you specify in the subject line you are against Joint Resolution SJ265/HJ435 ”Commending pregnancy care centers,” then tell them why you are opposed to this bill in a few sentences. ctrain’s post is a great reference for what to say. For example:

Dear [insert senator and delegate here],

I am one of your constituents, and I am writing to express my concern and strong opposition to Joint Resolution SJ265/HJ435 “Commending pregnancy care centers.”

These centers mislead women regarding their reproductive options. They claim to be “crisis pregnancy centers,” but their sole mission is to talk women out of considering abortion. Should this resolution pass, it will lay the groundwork for these fake clinics to receive even more money and support from the state, further hindering women’s access to a safe, legal medical procedure.

This is an issue that is important to all the women of Virginia, and I urge [insert senator and delegate here] to vote against Joint Resolution SJ265/HJ435.

Thank you for your time.

Regards,

[insert your name here]
[insert your address or town here]

Feel free to copy and paste this if you don’t have time to write a letter of your own, although personal letters are always better. Then follow-up your letter with a phone call, telling your representatives to vote against the bill and a brief (one or two sentences) explanation why.

Come on, Virginia! MAKE IT HAPPEN!

"This is the hard truth for progressive men who care about gender-based inequalities: When you leave..."

“
This is the hard truth for progressive men who care about gender-based inequalities: When you leave the public fight to others, you’re leaving it mostly to women—which, I don’t guess I need to point out to the intelligent and thoughtful men reading this site, is itself a perpetuation of gender-based inequality.

I’ll give you a moment to contemplate the many ways in which treating feminism as “woman’s work” is some fucked-up irony, right there.

Now here’s the other thing about leaving the rectification of gender-based inequalities to the ladies: Misogynist men don’t respect women. They don’t listen to women; they won’t acknowledge a woman’s authority on her own lived experiences; they’re not going to learn anything from women, and certainly not feminist women.

Men who think women are less than need to hear that they’re terribly, infuriatingly, and demonstrably wrong from other men. Publicly. Passionately. As loud as the loud, so very loud, voices on the other side. One of the ways their self-reassuring bullshit works is via the effective void of male dissension, which supports their erroneous belief that they are the “objective” arbiters of womanhood. Well, if we’re so wrong, where are the other people [men] to say so? they wonder smugly.

They count on feminist men never showing up en masse for the main event.
”

-
Shakesville: Crank It Up to 11 (via amberlrhea) (via clingtomymouth) (via ctrain) (via novazembla)

Husbands and Husbands

This video is only a minute long. You won’t regret watching it.

Watch what happens when a little boy named Calen meets a pair of husbands for the first time. He talked things out, asked a few questions, and things just seemed to click in his head for him.

Let’s quit with the ignorance and fear and play ping pong. (rb)

is the political party girl! here’s why:

she has been going HARD on the obesity scare and body shaming and self-image

she stays in on a friday night to watch PBS about FDR, and blog about it

she’s devoted to health care reform and provides great insight and analysis on the issues

she’s been carrying water on ableist language issues

her hair is gorgeous

go forth! follow!

Wow! Thank you! I’m blushing. So, hi there, new followers. I will try very hard to live up to the glowing image abbyjean has painted of me, although it is all true — especially the part about my hair.

Also, to everybody: I highly recommend following abbyjean (and not just because she wrote nice things about me!) but because I am more aware of and educated on feminism, disability activism, racism, poverty, and so many other issues because of her.

"While there is a gray area between consent and and non-consent, anybody who finds himself (or..."

“While there is a gray area between consent and and non-consent, anybody who finds himself (or herself) in that area is doing something wrong.”

-
Squashed: On consent
