OK. Friday morning rant time. I’ve seen this around Tumblr like 8 million times, and I think I’ve already commented about it once already, but this just bites my buttons. PLENTY OF PEOPLE SHOP AT WAL-MART. Plenty of “normal” people shop at Wal-Mart. Yes, it is a soul-sucking, small-business-killing, environment-crushing bastard of a corporation, but it is CHEAP. And there are A LOT of people, especially this year, who can’t AFFORD to shop at other places. Or have to drive long distances to find the variety Wal-Mart offers. Or by shopping at Wal-Mart can save a little money to let their son play baseball. My family shopped at Wal-Mart. My family STILL shops at Wal-Mart. Hell, when I was in high school my friends and I used to hang out at the Wal-Mart. HOWEVER. This Bingo card is so offensive, implying that the only people who would shop at a store obviously so tacky and declasse are poor, white trash folks, when the “stereotypes” could apply to lots of people not in the “Wal-Mart class” perpetuated by this Bingo Card.
White woman with 3+ multi-racial children. Angelina Jolie shops at Wal-Mart?
Someone a missing a limb. Army veterans shop at Wal-Mart?
Child over 5 drinking from a baby bottle. Handicapped children/people shop at Wal-Mart?
Bearded Woman. Someone who doesn’t buy into the media-created and propogated standards of beauty (and hairless women) shops at Wal-Mart?
Entire family wearing NASCAR apparel. Sports fans shop at Wal-Mart? Would this be less shocking if they were all wearing Yankees apparel?IT IS NOT A BAD THING TO SHOP AT WAL-MART. I mean, it’s bad for local business and the environment and all that jazz, but it doesn’t mean that you are uneducated, trashy, or anything else this Bingo card assumes you are.
Now, when someone makes “Barnyard Flea Market Bingo,” talk to me then. But this graphic isn’t funny to me - it’s just insulting.
THANK YOU. I grew increasingly horrified as I read this. There are plenty of valid reasons to criticize WalMart. The fact that poor people shop there is not one of them. This Bingo card consists of classist, racist, ableist and anti-fat sentiments - nothing more. Ew, mixed race kids… Are you fucking kidding me?
Well said, Katie. Plus, if you’re going to create a racist, classist BINGO card, try spelling “aisle” and “clothes” correctly.
