“Tea Party” Leader Melts Down on CNN: Obama Is An “Indonesian Muslim Turned Welfare Thug”

When someone represses all that hatred and racism then tries to express it under the guise of genuine concern for “working class Americans,” eventually he will reveal his true motivations.

About that “racist” word…

robot-heart-politics:

pandorasmittens:

Undoubtedly, some of the teabagger, GOP, “patriot”, and “concerned taxpayer” attacks have been rooted in racism. However, pointing this out and expecting for the right to have some magical, introspective moment of self-realization is fighting a losing battle, just as with any other highly charged, highly polarizing issue.

To this audience, “racism” is about segregation, the “n-word”, burning crosses, and blatantly refusing to hire the black guy. A “racist” is the guy with a mullet in the white sheet, yelling about Jesus while burning the aforementioned cross. And while these actions and thoughts are undoubtedly racist, their interpretation of the notion ends there.

This audience knows nothing of subtle or implicit bias, nothing about views, mannerisms, and actions that have become ingrained in society over time. To these people, the offensive water cooler joke is just that, a joke. Because they have not been personally affected, they dismiss it as good, clean fun. This audience believes that as long as there are no laws on the books saying nonwhite people (or women) are inferior, racism is officially over and anyone who fails to succeed is a victim of their own laziness as opposed to a victim of a system that is still changing, operated by individuals whose attitudes are evolving far more slowly than written law.

This doesn’t change by pointing out that hypocrisy, as they are unable to recognize said hypocrisy. Doing that requires a level of critical thinking that can only be learned by questioning one’s surroundings and modifying one’s principles: things they have been taught since birth are wrong or unnecessary, things relegated to “weaker” immoral minds.

Why does it seem like every battle for understanding and tact is ultimately futile?

Dear new toothpaste,

When you promised “All Day Fresh Breath” you should have added, “Also: All Day Everything Will Taste Like Mint.”  Because when two cups of coffee still have not removed the now rotten taste of mint from my mouth, we have a problem.

Oh noes, and awws all around.

Love it.

I worry about our society when we react to something this precious and adorable by saying, “That’s a credit card commercial.  Priceless.”

And people wonder how we got into so much debt that it caused a global economic meltdown.

(Sorry to be Captain Buzzkill.  This was my first reaction: “AWWW!!! Squee!”  Better?)

Target Women: Back 2 School

I wish someday someone would rockstare at me.  Maybe I don’t posses enough blingitude… Sometimes I feel too much pressure, but then I remember what my mom said: I mean, school is the fashion show that prepares us for the fashion show of life!

On the Baucus Bill:

notthatkindagay:

I think Senator Baucus had caused something quite interesting to happen. In his version of the health bill today, he has not included a public option. That, however, is not to say that a public option with a trigger won’t be part of the final package.

Instead, he’s introduced the Co-Op function as a mechanism by which to cover the uninsured. There’s one problem with this, however: insurance companies and large employers cannot participate as part of the Co-Op. Co-Ops will be required to essentially build their own plans, negotiate with provider networks, and negotiate drug prices, all without actually cooperating with current insurance providers to expand coverage. Additionally, the bill doesn’t allow for large companies to participate. The Co-Op will only be able to provide services for individuals without coverage. Thus, you’ll have individuals buying form Co-Ops which will then comprise a likely high risk pool of people with potentially low incomes and probably a large federal subsidies in a program that is unable to harness the power of large pools to negotiate lower prices. Sounds confusing? It is. A government run public option, however, has the size and force of the federal government with an established relationship with care providers, networks and pharmaceutical companies via Medicaid/Medicare. And what provider is going to deny guaranteed business with the federal government, versus multiple unstable new Co-Ops?

What impact will this have? Some insurance companies, if given the choice only between co-op and a public option with a trigger, they are more likely to advocate for the public option with a trigger. Why? Because they have a window of opportunity to absorb millions of new customers while trying to prove that they can handle the influx, still remain solvent AND prove that there’s no need for a public option. With the Co-Op, it’s an immediate government program which prevents insurance companies (private business) from vastly expanding their customer base.

This could be a pretty smart move on the part of Baucus, and a catch-22 for Republicans.

There is so much awesomeness in this photo right now I think my head might explode.

I say we make this his official White House portrait.

But it was not that fun without most of you.

I showed up!  With links!  I was servicey!  But not until the end.

Next time let’s synchronize our watches or something so we won’t miss it again.

Anyone wanna write this op-ed for me?

Making a coherant, convincing argument in fewer than 750 words is a challenge for someone like me.

Marvelous Toy - Peter, Paul, and Mary

I’m so sad to hear that Mary Travers passed away.  I grew up listening to Peter, Paul, and Mary; watching their PBS specials; loving their songs.

I can distinctly remember watching their TV concerts with my dad, the two of us sitting on the floor eating windmill cookies and singing along.  Peter, Paul, and Mary albums were a requirement on family road trips.  Their songs are the soundtrack of my childhood, and “Marvelous Toy” was my favorite for the longest time.  My dad always made the best sound effects — zzzzip-ing and whirrrrrr-ing and BOP-ing along with the song.  Ah, nostalgia.

Why, yes, I grew up in a nerdy, goofy home.  Why do you ask?

Mary Travers - And When I Die

I’m not scared of dying, and I don’t really care.
If it’s peace you find in dying, well, then let the time be near.
If it’s peace you find in dying, when dying time is near,
just bundle up my coffin cause it’s cold way down there.
And when I die, and when I’m gone,
there’ll be one child born and a world to carry on.
There’ll be one child born to carry on.
